Celebrating the start of a new chapter at Edmonton Catholic Schools while reflecting on the life of God's influencer, St. Carlo Acutis.

The grand opening and blessing of St. Carlo Acutis Catholic High School was held on October 13, 2026. Hundreds of students, staff, families, and community members packed the school gym to join in liturgy led by Archbishop Stephen Hero.

Guests heard from MP Billy Morin, who shared how five generations of his family received an excellent Catholic education through Edmonton Catholic Schools. Minister Dale Nally, Trustee Leah Fiorillo, Councillor Erin Rutherford, and Chief Superintendent Lynnette Anderson all shared remarks about the importance of Catholic education, the influence of St. Carlo Acutis, and the excitement around the opening of this new school in northwest Edmonton. We were also pleased to welcome Mayor Andrew Knack.

St. Carlo Acutis Catholic High School opened its doors in September and is now serving more than 600 Grades 10 and 11 students.

Following the event, Archbishop Hero and Father Julian toured the school, blessing classrooms and learning spaces. The opening came nearly 20 years to the day that St. Carlo Acutis passed away.

About St. Carlo Acutis

Carlo Acutis was born in 1991 and died at the age of 15 shortly after being diagnosed with Leukemia. Though his life was short, Acutis was a selfless and caring millennial who understood the importance of living a life rooted in love and service to others. The Italian Catholic was passionate about computer technology and video games, but it’s his devotion to the Eucharist that will be most remembered. He created a website of Eucharistic miracles and served his community by spending time with the elderly and young people. He found and lived his faith through school, naturally integrating prayer, sport, study, and charity into his days as a child and young man. On September 7, 2025, Carlo Acutis was officially canonized and became the Church’s first millennial saint.
