Home Education

Home Education allows parents to be their child’s primary educator. They are responsible for managing, delivering, and supervising their child’s courses of study. The goal of this program is to develop academic programming that meets Alberta Education Home Education regulations.

We believe that the ideal model is one where the school administration, teachers and parents can work closely together to support student success.

Commonly Asked Questions:

How does a parent register for Home Education? All inquiries should be forwarded to Milena Verduci (milena.verduci@ecsd.net), Home Education Division Coordinator with Alternative Education, Student Services, who will guide families through the process.

If a parent chooses to Home Educate, who is responsible for the child’s education? The parent is responsible for their child’s education. They commit to the planning, the delivery and the assessment of their children’s education. ECSD provides a facilitator to answer questions and guide parents along the way.

Does the Home Education family stay connected to their community or current school? YES. If the family is choosing ECSD as the supervisory board, then the student(s) remain registered with their ECSD School.

Is Home Education the same as Home Schooling? YES. Though the terms are often interchanged, the official title as stated by Alberta Education is Home Education.

Is ECSD’s Online Learning the same as Home Education? NO. Home Education is completely ‘parent-directed’, while ECSD’s Online Learning for high school students is ‘teacher-directed’.

Do parents receive funding for every child being home educated? YES. Funding is $901 per child in grades 1 to 12, and $450 for Kindergarten students and can be used by parents to purchase approved resources and services. To qualify for funding, applications must be submitted and approved by September 30 of the current school year.
