Edmonton Catholic Schools is fortunate to have many incredible volunteers in our schools!

During National Volunteer Week – April 28 - May 2, we want to highlight their extraordinary service and the indelible impact they have on our students and staff. This year’s theme, Volunteers Make Waves, highlights the power, impact, and importance of individual and collective volunteer efforts in our schools.

To all of our volunteers, thank you for being a living witness to Christ’s love — generously giving your time, talents, and energy to support our Catholic school community. We celebrate and recognize all the volunteers, including students, staff, and families, who play an integral role in supporting our schools. Here are just a few of their amazing stories.

Volunteers of ECSD

Wilhelma is a parent volunteer who supports the St. Gerard Catholic Elementary School community three to four days a week. She helps deliver and serve the lunch program, graciously interacting with the students and staff, bringing humour and laughter to our building. Wilhelma is always busy serving our school. She also volunteers with class fieldtrips, prepares treat bags for students, and pitches in wherever and whenever needed.

Joshua and Joferson are fine gentlemen in our community. Inspired by coaches who made them into the disciplined team players they are, they chose to give back to students at Father McCaffery Catholic High School this year. Both coaches have been instrumental in establishing our basketball program. They have dedicated every Tuesday and Thursday morning for open gym skill sessions for all athletes, providing opportunities to those who did not make the teams, while also coaching our Grade 9 Boys basketball team. In total, they have put in over +200 hours of their time to give back to students and the school. They personify who we are at McCaffery! Faith filled, Inspired, Resilient and Empathetic!

At Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Elementary School, we are blessed with an incredible community of parent volunteers whose dedication and enthusiasm enrich every corner of our school life. From running our weekly hot lunch program to organizing outstanding events like Mini Olympics, our parents go above and beyond to create unforgettable experiences for our students. They bring art to life through Art Cards, transform family dances with photo booths and face painting, and organize our much-loved annual Christmas Market. Their unwavering support and deep investment in their children's educational journey make our school community vibrant, connected, and full of heart.

Our St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School Dream Team is deeply enriched by the tireless efforts of these amazing parents! Dena and Kim are ever present in our building, whether they are serving hot dog lunches to our entire population from the Please &Thank You Café or helping in our Kindergarten classrooms or jumping into pick up grocery donations from Safeway for our Grocery Love program. In addition to their daily school contributions, they are also both members of our School Advisory Council. Thank you for everything, Dena and Kim. You make God’s dream come true, just by being you!!

Bishop Savaryn Catholic Elementary School is truly fortunate to have Melissa as a dedicated volunteer. As a valued neighbour, Melissa has embraced the role of our official bus safety volunteer with commitment and heartwarming enthusiasm. Every morning, rain or shine, in the chill of winter or the heat of summer, Melissa greets our students with a warm smile and a positive attitude as they arrive by bus. She diligently supervises crosswalk crossings and, at the end of each school day, makes certain every student boards their bus securely. Melissa’s kindness, selflessness, and dedication embody the spirit of community and service. She is an extraordinary role model, inspiring all of us with hope, love, and compassion.

At St. Richard Catholic Elementary School, we are truly blessed to have our very own angel—Monica Comba. A retired ECSD teacher, Monica has been volunteering with us for the past three years, generously offering her time to support our young readers. Every Tuesday and Wednesday, she arrives with a bright smile, working with small groups of students and bringing her positive, gentle energy to all of us. Her presence is a true reflection of our Catholic values of kindness and service. Whether it's through her thoughtful encouragement or even arriving with coffee to brighten our day, Monica’s kindness knows no bounds. We truly believe that angels walk among us, and Monica is undoubtedly one of them!

Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good deeds and give glory to your Father in heaven.

We are so blessed to have a parent community that finds time to support school initiatives such as field trips, book fairs, in-school events, and fundraising events at Father Leo Green Catholic Elementary School! Our students look forward to the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake breakfast. This event would not occur were it not for the many volunteers who take time out of their day to make the pancakes, cook the breakfast sausages, serve students, set up, and clean up the gym.  Not only are our students taken care of, but our staff is also able to enjoy breakfast alongside their students! A big thank you to all our parent volunteers who always make this such a memorable event for our students!

At Holy Child Catholic Elementary School, we’re blessed with an amazing group of parent volunteers who bring energy, heart, and a whole lot of spirit to our school community. Thanks to the dedication of our School Advisory Council, we’re able to fundraise for all kinds of important extras, from helping cover field trip costs and adding new classroom tech to supporting families in need, stocking up on indoor recess games, and making Grade 6 farewells extra special.  Their time, creativity, and care help enrich learning and make school life even better. Thank you, Merci, and Gracias for everything you do to make Holy Child such a wonderful place to learn!

At St. Elizabeth Catholic Elementary School, we’re lucky to have an incredible community supporter in Danie, a proud member of the Edmonton Mill Woods Rotary Club. Danie generously volunteers countless hours to support our school community and is known to many students as “The Pancake Man” thanks to his top-notch pancake-flipping skills. Danie also played a leading role in the development of our new St. Elizabeth Outdoor Learning Garden.
