Please Note: This program will only be available at out our Clareview location.
Our Quarterly Program (QTR) is designed primarily for those students who are upgrading and planning to attend post secondary as early as the next possible semester.
How does QTR work?
Students who register in a QTR course will take that course over a shortened time period. Our TCL or GCL classes run for the entire semester. Our QTR courses run half the semester but for twice the scheduled time period as compared to our other classes.
In other words, you can register for a QTR class that runs from September to November in time for the November diploma writings but the class will run twice the length of time during the day - either all morning or all afternoon.
Who is eligible to register for a QTR course?
Only students in Grade 13 and 14 (Continuing Students) who are upgrading or on the verge of credentialing may take a QTR course. Students in Grades 10-12 are not eligible nor are adult students over the age of 20 as of September 1st of that year.
Is attendance required in a QTR course?
Attendance is absolutely critical in a QTR course. MIssing classes in QTR classes can have a dramatic impact on the student's learning. A QTR course is not recommended if you plan on working during the scheduled time in which you have the course.
Additionally, once the course has begun, students who have not attended during the first week and has not made contact with the school will be removed from the course to open up enrollment for others that may be interested in registering. .
Can I bring a device to a QTR course?
St. Joseph High School a device friendly school environment. If a student wishes to bring their own student owned device for use in a QTR course, they are free to do so.
Please be aware of the recent provincial requirements for cell phones in classrooms. St. Joseph High School has committed to providing a school environment that focuses on learning in the classroom and therefore the use of any student owned devices will be used for learning and not for activities that are not related to achieving the learning outcomes.
How do I communicate with my teacher?
Once a student has been registered in a QTR course, you will have access to the teacher's email via PowerSchool. You can contact the teacher via the email link that is provided to you.
Additionally, you can always contact the school at 780-426-2010 and request a callback.
Please be aware that teachers are in class most of the day and may be unable to return your call or email until the next business day. We strive to return calls within a 24-48 hour time frame.
It is also important to realize that students who are in a QTR course are usually over the age of 18 and therefore, most communication will occur with the student and not with the parent. While we appreciate the role that parents play in a child's education, most students in a QTR course are legal adults. Therefore, while we welcome and encourage parent participation in their child's education, once your child is over the age of 18, our main contact is your child.
With this in mind, it is important that students over the age of 18 register for their own Parent Account in PowerSchool.
Can I drop my QTR course?
Yes you may. While we encourage you to continue in the course, we understand that there may be situations that arise that prohibit a student in continuing with a course. We encourage the student to contact us immediately to let us know that they will not be continuing in the course.
It is very important to let us know within the start of the course if they do not plan on attending the course. This is so that we can offer the spot to another student who may need it for their educational plan.
How do exams work with QTR courses?
Most examinations will occur during class. These are coordinated by your Course Advisor (CA).
Diploma writings occur in November and January. They are provincially set and cannot be altered. Please be aware that if it is the second time you are taking a course that you will need to log into MyPass and pay the re-write fee in order to have your marks released to you.
I will be missing a portion of the course. Can I have extra support to complete the course?
As indicated previously, attendance is critical in a QTR course. Missing a portion of it will significantly impact you studies.
Some examples of situations that may impact your attendance are:
- Taking work shifts during the day
- Planning a vacation during the course
- Overlapping educational programs with another institution
- Other activities that may impact your attendance
If any of these, or possibly other life situations occur and will impact your attendance, you may want to reconsider taking a QTR course.
